Dear residents.
Today, I attended Tameside Magistrates' Court alongside colleagues from Oldham Council's Community Safety Team and a courageous local resident, where we successfully obtained a Closure Order for 23 Station Road, Grotton.
This address has been the subject of ongoing reports of anti-social behaviour and criminality over a significant period of time, causing considerable concern and disruption to local residents.
Since taking over as the Neighbourhood Sergeant for Saddleworth and Lees, resolving the issues associated with this property has been one of my key priorities. I wanted to ensure that the concerns raised by residents were taken seriously and that positive action was taken as quickly as possible.
Whilst today's result is a significant milestone, it is important to recognise that it is the culmination of approximately four months of dedicated work involving detailed investigations, intelligence gathering, evidence collection and partnership working behind the scenes. This has involved close collaboration between Greater Manchester Police, Oldham Council and local residents to build a robust case for presentation before the court.
What is a Closure Order? A Closure Order is a legal power granted by the court that prohibits access to a property for a specified period. The order is designed to prevent further anti-social behaviour, criminality and nuisance associated with an address. Anyone who enters or remains in the property without lawful authority commits a criminal offence and may be arrested.
What should residents do? If you see anyone entering the property, attempting to gain access, or suspect that the Closure Order is being breached, please contact Greater Manchester Police immediately. Report any concerns via:
If officers have grounds to believe the Closure Order is being breached, we have powers to stop, challenge, arrest and prosecute those involved. Breaching a Closure Order is a criminal offence and the courts can impose significant penalties on those responsible.
I would like to thank all residents who have taken the time to report incidents and concerns to your local Neighbourhood Policing Team. Community information and intelligence have played a vital role in achieving this outcome. I would also like to stress the importance of continuing to report issues when they arise. If we do not know what is happening within our communities, we cannot take the necessary action to address it.
Finally, I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the brave neighbour who provided evidence throughout this process and attended court today to give evidence in person. Their commitment, alongside the efforts of many other residents who came forward with information and reports, has been instrumental in securing this result.
This outcome demonstrates what can be achieved when local residents, partner agencies and neighbourhood policing work together to tackle the issues that matter most to our communities.
Regards PS 1650 Andy Holian – Saddleworth & Lees Neighbourhood Sergeant.
